Moxie

moxie noun

mox·ie | \ ˈmäk-sē \

Definition of moxie:

(Meriam Webster Dictionary)

Tonight I watched a Netflix movie my daughter excitedly recommended entitled “Moxie” and it did not disappoint. In fact it was a most unexpectedly delightful and empowering choice for today, International Women’s Day, so much so that I had a hard time pulling myself away to get back to my evening grind. (emails, planning, newsletters etc) I was enthralled by the storyline, the themes, the characters, the battle cry of these young women challenging their “sexist and status quo” high school traditions in a sisterhood of me-too, in your face MOXIE. So clever!

What I appreciated most was the title (also the title of the pamphlet the main character produced anonymously to spark the revolution) and how it captured the spirit of this day; “a global day of of recognition celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women and girls, and raising awareness of the work left to be done.”

Moxie, by definition, is to be full of pep, energy, courage, determination and know-how. This is the recipe, plain and simple. Note, it’s a noun not a verb or adjective. So, not just what we do and how we can be described, but our state of being. It’s embodied in all the women who have blazed the trail before us, alongside us and will long after us, to improve our status, quality of life and ability to soar and thrive, for there is indeed much work left to be done.

I don’t have to look beyond my own 60 year circle to find my moxie sisterhood: my mentors, my daughter(s) mother(s), sisters, aunts and nieces, my colleagues, my friends; all have left a lasting impression on me. Your inspiration, your courage, your stories emblazoned on my heart may one day weave their way through this blog and my books and always in my own marvelous, moxie self!

Happy International Women’s Day!
